A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
